Iowa Unity Coalition Endorses Rita Vargas for Re-Election for Scott County Recorder

The Iowa Unity Coalition is pleased to announce the endorsement of Rita Vargas for re-election as Scott County Recorder in the upcoming general election to be held on November 3, 2026. The Iowa Unity Coalition is dedicated to building political power within our diverse and underrepresented communities at every level of government.

Rita Vargas has served as Scott County Recorder since 2003 and is running for her 7th term. She was the first Latina elected to public office in the State of Iowa. Prior to her election as recorder, she worked for Senator Tom Harkin as a district representative and case worker for 13 years. As recorder, Rita has worked to streamline the records in her office, protect personal information and make the office more accessible to citizens.

Rita graduated from Davenport High School and Marycrest College with a BA in social behavioral science. She earned a Master’s degree in public administration from Drake University. Ms. Vargas is the 2022 recipient of the Iowa Unity Coalition Trailblazer Award. Her work in the public sector has been inspirational for Latinas across Iowa.

Ben Nizzi is a lifelong resident of Dallas County and has a background in the skilled trades. He is the president of Ironworkers Local 67 and has a history of advocating for the people he represents. Ben is also a trustee on the union’s Pension and Health and Welfare funds. His family owned Alice’s Spaghettiland and he learned the value of hard work there.

Ben Nizzi is committed to serving the people of Dallas county. He will meet the challenges of rapid growth the county is experiencing. Mike Jones is currently serving his second term as the mayor of Windsor Heights. He is a lifelong Iowan and graduated from Drake Law School. Mr. Jones works as a public defender for the state of Iowa. Dr. Srinivas is a physician from Des Moines and an infectious disease expert. She was elected to Iowa House District 30 in the 2022 general election, making her the youngest woman of color ever elected to the Iowa Legislature. She is currently serving her second term.

Megan is an infectious disease physician, public health policy researcher, and the Chief Medical Officer at Primary Health Care. She has served on the Iowa Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and the board of the Iowa chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI Iowa). Dr. Srinivas currently serves on the Iowa Integrated Health Planning and Advisory Council and the Medical Assistance Advisory Council (Title XIX). Megan hosts the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and American Medical Association (AMA) infection prevention and health equity podcast, "Stories of Care."

John Forbes is a former state representative who retired from the legislature in 2024 after serving 6 terms. Prior to serving in the legislature, he served on the Urbandale City Council for 8 years. He is a pharmacist and the former owner of Medicap Pharmacies located in Polk County and surrounding areas. During his career, Mr. Forbes has won several state and national pharmacy awards and is a past president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association. He has also fundraised and led several honor flights, taking veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials.

John is a strong advocate for improving mental health services and has the expertise and experience needed to bring improved and expanded services to Polk County. He will prioritize efforts to reduce housing insecurity and homelessness by expanding affordable housing options. Additionally, he will seek ways to address food insecurity and ways to make services more accessible. John recognizes the serious clean water problems we have and will work to find long term solutions. The Iowa Unity Coalition is pleased to announce the endorsement of Jon Green for re-election as Johnson County Supervisor, District 2 in the upcoming Democratic primary election to be held on June 2, 2026. Supervisor Green was first elected in June 2021 in a special election to fill the seat vacated by former supervisor Janelle Retti. He won re-election in 2022 and serves as chair of the board of supervisors. He previously served as Lone Tree mayor from 2018 to 2019. Jon attended Morningside College in Sioux City, earning a BA in mass communication in 2007. In 2009, when Jon was a newspaper reporter in Wyoming, the Democratic Governor, Dave Freudenthal, hired him as his press secretary. He most recently worked as a systems administrator in information technology.

Jon Green has shown himself to be a dedicated and passionate leader. He has worked to protect the public safety of Johnson county and ensure basic human rights and dignity are preserved. Supervisor Conrad was first elected to the board of supervisors in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. She has served as board chair 3 years. Ms. Conrad is the board representative to the Webster County Emergency Medical Service Advisory Council, Visit Fort Dodge, and the executive committee of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance. She was appointed to serve on the Iowa Commission on Community Action Agencies and, most recently, the Iowa Workforce Development Board. Niki is currently the director of marketing at Friendship Haven.

Mr. Hall is a lifelong Cedar Valley resident. After graduating from Waterloo West High School, Tavis attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo. After college, Tavis went on to work as U.S. Congressman Bruce Braley's Caseworker and later as a District Representative. Mr. Hall went on to lead the Waterloo Convention & Visitors Bureau as their Executive Director. Tavis has served on a number of community boards and commissions, including Waterloo Planning, Programming & Zoning Commission and NAACP of Black Hawk County. He currently serves as executive director of Experience Waterloo. He was elected to the board of supervisors in 2022 and has served as board chair.

Tavis Hall believes the Waterloo area is on the cusp of becoming a major tourism area and is committed to making sure every voice is heard as the area undergoes change. He will continue to strengthen county services, build partnerships, and make smart investments in the future.

She also worked to expand access to insulin and fought for fair and safe housing for her constituents.

State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott is an ordained Lutheran Minister who has served as a hospital chaplain and parish pastor. She previously worked as the Coordinator of Interfaith Engagement at the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network, bringing diverse religious communities together to respond to food insecurity.

Sarah was first elected to the Iowa State Senate in 2020 and was the only Democrat to flip a Republican-held State Senate seat in 2022, defeating the Republican State Senate President Jake Chapman. She won re-election in the fall of 2024.

In the State Senate, Senator Sarah Trone Garriott has focused on helping working families: good schools, clean water, quality accessible healthcare, economic opportunity and civil rights. Ms. Hardman is completing her second term on the West Des Moines City Council. She is the President and CEO of Lutheran Services in Iowa. Renee Hardman is also the past president of the Chrysalis Foundation and former inaugural board member of the Latina Leadership Initiative. Rob Barron served eight years on the Des Moines School Board as an at large representative. He was the first Latino ever elected to a school board in Polk County. During that time, he served as chair and vice-chair. He worked for U.S. Senator Tom Harkin for 13 years and is also the former director of NextGen Climate. In 2015, he founded The Latino Political Network, a nonpartisan organization which serves to educate and empower Latinos to serve at all levels of elected office throughout Iowa. Rob is a graduate of Roosevelt High School and Grinnell College. Currently, he is the Executive Director of Seed Coalition and lives with his wife Angela Matsuoka and their 2 children in the Beaverdale neighborhood in Des Moines.

The Iowa Unity Coalition is pleased to announce our endorsement of Josh Mandelbaum for Des Moines City Council Ward 3 in the upcoming municipal election to be held on November 4, 2025.. The Iowa Unity Coalition is dedicated to building political power within our diverse and underrepresented communities at every level of government.

Mr. Mandelbaum currently serves on the Des Moines City Council representing Ward 3 and is in his second term. He is a Des Moines native and a graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Iowa School of Law. Josh served as a policy advisor to Governor Tom Vilsack and works as a senior attorney for the Environmental Law and Policy Center.

We believe Mr. Mandelbaum has shown a strong commitment to eliminating inequities for the diverse communities in Des Moines. He has been a voice for progressive policies that help working people. State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott is an ordained Lutheran Minister who has served as a hospital Chaplin and parish pastor. Sarah was first elected to the Iowa State Senate in 2020 and was the only Democrat to flip a Republican-held State Senate seat in 2022, defeating the Republican State Senate President Jake Chapman.

The Iowa Unity Coalition is dedicated to building political power within our diverse and underrepresented communities at every level of government.

Molly is serving her first term in the Iowa House since her election in November, 2022. Representative Buck is a teacher who has taught in the Ankeny School District for the last 19 years and currently teaches fifth grade. She is a graduate of the University of Nebraska -Lincoln with a Bachelor’s in education and received her Masters degree in Teacher Effectiveness and Professional Development from Drake University. Molly and her family currently reside in Ankeny and have lived there for 24 years.

Molly Buck is a dedicated public servant, educator, and a strong advocate for her community.

Aime Wichtendahl has served on the Hiawatha City Council for the past 8 years. She is the first transgender woman elected to public office in Iowa. Aime has a B.A. in journalism and political science from Mount Mercy College. Ms. Wichtendahl has supported small business growth, expanded transportation infrastructure and expanding recreational opportunities. She is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, especially those of transgender youth.

Brenna Bird, Do The Right Thing

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is appealing a judge’s decision that cleared the way for election officials to offer non-English voting materials to the public.

Under Polk County District Court Judge Scott Rosenberg's June 29 ^th ruling, Iowa counties are allowed, at their discretion, to provide citizens with non-English ballots, voter-registration forms and absentee ballot applications. The decision dissolved a 15-year-old injunction that had blocked the practice since 2008. Former Iowa Congressman Steve King filed a lawsuit in 2008 against the Iowa Secretary of State barring voter registration forms in any language other than English.

The court’s ruling grew out of a lawsuit filed on behalf of the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa. The lawsuit challenged the state’s application of the English Language Reaffirmation Act to election materials. The act requires that all political documents from the state “shall be in the English language” unless the materials are deemed “necessary to secure the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.” LULAC argued, and a district court judge agreed, that voting is a constitutional right. People have a constitutional right to vote and language should not be a barrier to voting.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 banned the use of any “test or device” to deny individuals the right to vote, including any requirement that a potential voter “demonstrate the ability to read, write, understand, or interpret any matter.”

Our elections work best when eligible voters are able to receive honest and truthful election information in a language they understand. Attorney General Brenna Bird needs to stop being a barrier to election access and do the right thing and drop her appeal. Give all Iowans the Constitutional Right to participate freely in our voting process.

Iowa Unity Coalition Event: How Mothers Became a Political Force

On Tuesday, April 11th, the Iowa Unity Coalition will host a special event, "How Mothers Became a Political Force." This event will include three immigrant mothers of recently elected Democratic legislators who will share their personal stories. Each mother will discuss her journey to the United States and the challenges she faced adjusting to her new home.

Our special guests include Hala Abumaizer-Scheetz (Syria), mother of Representative Sami Scheetz; Geetha Srinivas (India), mother of Representative Dr. Megan Srinivas; and Kineret Zabner (Israel/Venezuela), mother of Representative Adam Zabner.

Our moderator for this discussion will be Roxy Strike, with program facilitators Shaimaa Aly and Anika Yadav. Coalition members will have the opportunity to ask questions of our panelists during this program.

This event will be cohosted by the Indo American PAC IA.

Doors will open at 6:00 pm. Our panel discussion is scheduled from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

SEVERAL DEMOCRATIC AND LABOR GROUPS CALL ON EDDIE MAURO TO SUSPEND CAMPAIGN; APOLOGIZE FOR DOXXING

DES MOINES, IA - Eddie Mauro has had a long, sordid history of attacking women with his campaigns, and now his tactics have gone too far with doxxing, bullying, and intimidating women. The Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, the Iowa Unity Coalition, the Iowa Democratic Party Black Caucus, Latino Caucus, API Caucus, Progressive Caucus, Labor Caucus, Veterans' Caucus, and Disability Caucus call on Eddie Mauro to suspend his campaign.

First, these groups noticed Eddie Mauro's pattern of attacks on women through his campaigns over the years. He has shown a pattern of only attacking female candidates, such as Joni Ernst, Cindy Axne, and Teresa Greenfield, but never his male opponents. Recently, a Mauro family member called Senator Claire Celsi screaming belligerently after she endorsed Dr. Megan Srinivas. Senator Celsi tweeted about it here:

Secondly, a theme central to Eddie Mauro's campaign message is that he is the real "Southsider." Megan is an Indian-American daughter of immigrants. Campaigning on "you're not from here" is hurtful to the vibrant immigrant community of Southside Des Moines and all candidates of color.

Lastly, doxxing and publishing an opponent's personal information as a campaign is entirely unacceptable. Yesterday, Eddie Mauro's campaign manager, Mark Langgin, tweeted a photo of Dr. Srinivas' 2012 voter registration form. It contained her birthdate, driver's license number, and part of her Social Security number. He has tweeted her address in the past, as well, and claimed to have knocked on her door during "canvassing." It is hard to believe that Langgin was trying to persuade Dr. Srinivas to vote for Eddie Mauro — a more convincing case could be made that he was trying to intimidate her. There is no place for this type of behavior in politics. Women, particularly women of color, face enough obstacles when they run for office, and this sort of threatening and outlandish behavior is unacceptable.

Southside Des Moines has a hardworking, diverse, and vibrant community of all colors of people. There is also a large immigrant community who came here for the same reasons many of our grandparents and great-grandparents immigrated to the United States. Acts of doxxing and intimidation have no place in our political environment.

On behalf of the above-mentioned organizations, we call on Eddie Mauro to suspend his campaign.

Democratic candidates Deidre DeJear and State Representative Ras Smith have agreed to participate in the gubernatorial forum. Other candidates, regardless of party affiliation, may be considered based on the criteria set forth by the Iowa Unity Coalition.

Please speak to your friends about the Coalition so people aren’t just hearing from Mitch over and over. Swati has found some people who want to donate to our 501(c)(3) as soon as we file our paperwork.

7) Chair Report - Mitch

Membership:

We have 260 memberships. 30 new members since our last meeting.

Fundraising:

We have raised over $10,000 in total.

Communicating with The Hughes Project, and we’re on the list to get funding. It could be anywhere from $5,000-$50,000 for voter outreach. Will start voter outreach in both rural and urban areas later this year (summer).

NPO:

Will start 501(c)(4) this month and 501(c)(3) in July.

Question from Terry about the difference between the two.

Discussion about the Cedar Rapids mayoral race — there is a progressive Black candidate, Amara Andrews.

Suggestion: Send out Bylaws to new members when they join.

8) Election and Endorsement Subcommittee - Patrick & Lauri

Membership, not the Board, will decide. Should be a transparent process, vote aggregate count will be made public. A preliminary process has been determined and is as follows:

Identify in advance those elections for which the Coalition will definitely be endorsing a Candidate.
Send candidates a questionnaire on their positions. Candidates must have an alignment of at least 75% with the Coalition to advance.
Invite pre-qualified candidates to present to the Coalition’s membership at large.

Iowa Unity Coalition: Who We Are; What We Believe

The Iowa Unity Coalition is an independent organization not affiliated with any political party. We promote certain ideals that we believe are non-partisan, and we work to unify voters across the political spectrum around these ideals. These ideals we believe in are—

Healthcare: We believe in guaranteed healthcare for everybody.
Voter Rights: We believe in one person/one vote.
Worker Rights: We believe workers have a right to safe working conditions. We believe in a living wage and in equal pay for equal work.
Protecting the Environment: We believe in putting measures in place that will safeguard our environment and ensure clean drinking water.
Education: We believe in guaranteeing quality and safe K-12 education everywhere in Iowa. We believe post-high school public education and training should be available tuition free just like K 12. This includes vocational training, 2-year community college, and 4-year public colleges.
Prevent Hunger Locally: We believe we need to put an end to hunger in Iowa.

The Coalition may, from time to time, amend these ideals through majority membership consent.

Renee Hardman suggests that we should add affordable housing.

Unfortunately, Supervisor Walker was unable to attend, as he was stuck in Oklahoma City. We will reschedule him for another time.
